I’m really picky when it comes to eating fish.  First, I don’t like the fishy kind of smell most fish have.  Second, I find too much effort to pick through the bones when eating fish that’s not boneless.  Third, for all that effort, it’s not quite as filling as meat.  If I had fish for a meal, it’s guaranteed that I’ll be hungry again in a few hours.

Sashimi, though, is different.  I love it.  Since getting pregnant I’ve had a conscious effort to keep it out of my mind.  All I can think about these days is me going on a sashimi binge as soon as I give birth.

Sardines on the other hand, those that come in cans, are one of the few edible stuff that I don’t like.  I just can’t stand the smell of canned sardines in tomato sauce.  My cats love it though probably because it smells really fishy.  They prefer sardines over cat food and they go crazy as soon as they see you walking over to the pantry and hold a can.

But not all sardines are created equal.  Thank goodness for that because these days I need a good source of Omega 3 Fatty acids for the baby’s brain development.  I love bottled sardines in olive or corn oil as much as I hate the canned ones.  These bottles are my sustenance when I’m too lazy to cook for one -which most of the time.  All it takes is steaming hot rice, a bottle of sardines and a squeeze of lemon and mmm mmm mmm.  I prefer olive oil over corn oil though and most of the brands use corn oil except the Zaragoza Spanish style sardines which uses olive oil.  For variety, I usually alternate bottled sardines with bottled gourmet tuyo from Connie’s Kitchen.  There’s another brand of bottled tuyo that I’ve tried and liked better because it’s less salty but I forgot the brand.   The kippers in capers from Connie’s Kitchen is also a must try but it’s not available in most supermarkets.   It’s bottled smoked fish, perfect when paired with salted egg and tomatoes, washed down with a glass of natural orange juice.
