P450/month is something most of us can spare. If you charge it on your credit card, you probably won’t even notice it. It would equate to more or less one night out with friends on food and booze but for the same amount you can also get to send a Filipino kid to school and give him a chance to get out of poverty and maybe even support his family, and, if we lived in an ideal world, maybe also give back to society.

Jorey used to sponsor a kid with worldvision.org.ph but he stopped when they stopped collecting his P450.00/month. They can pick-up your P450 at your convenience. They used to pick-up cash but now only pick up checks. Jor didn’t have a checking account then. We’ve always thought about sponsoring again so finally, we got to. It was long overdue. It’s not a lot but at least it’s something. About 6-7 years ago, the sponsor amount was already P450.00. It’s good that they were able to keep it at that through the years because it’s more affordable for the working class to help out.

But what I’ve always wanted is to help organizations with an environmental cause. I remember organizing a film showing of “Erin Brockovich” at the UP film center for our org… it wasn’t much of a hit. I guess Julia Roberts was not enough to make people go see a movie with an environmental message. I guess you can’t blame the viewing public if what they want is action and drama. I even watched “A Civil Action” (1998) in the theatre! – that movie crossed out environmental law from my list of career prospects because those lawyers went bankrupt. Needless to say, it was a dragging movie. Hayao Miyazaki movies are definitely much more interesting to watch! Al Gore’s An inconvenient truth kinda brought me back to grade school. I felt the same way when my teachers were talking about global warming and the greenhouse effect. It’s a mix of fear and pity for the animals and the next generation.

I’m not sure though if local environmental groups are really doing something so I’d probably just adopt a polar bear at the singapore zoo.
