Lost in English Translation
Last weekend, there was an article on the newspaper and the title in big red letters had the word “license” spelled as “licence”. I looked it up and apparently “licence” is a British variant of “license” which makes sense since Singapore was under British rule. It just probably doesn’t look right to someone whose english is based on the American dictionary.
But I saw this billboard on our way to Sim Lim last weekend. It said “Drink driving shatters lives.” I couldn’t take a picture of it coz I wasn’t near the window but it was a big billboard with major sponsors. Hmm, I could be wrong but isn’t the grammar off? But how could it be? It’s a major billboard so it must have been somehow proofread by someone who could speak english during the whole process before it was approved. So, is drink driving also an accepted variant of drunk driving?
